19th C. Shirvan Prayer Rug - 3'0" x 5'2"
#5885
3’-0” x 5’-2”
AGE & ORIGIN:
c. 1895
Caucuses
OVERVIEW:
Speaking outside the bounds of a typical item description, these are some of my personal favorite types of rugs. There is so much life in these small Caucasian rugs from the 19th century especially. The use of vegetal dyes obviously helps with this, allowing these rugs to continue in their vibrancy despite their age and, in this case, wear. The use of varying and playful motifs also give a clear indication that despite being a ‘prayer’ rug, this was for decorative purposes.
The addition of the specific Hijri calendar dates (1313 lunar calendar) give the piece a specific year for dating as well as a wonderful human touch.
CONDITION:
Areas of foundation exposure and missing outer border. Selvedges have been re-woven and ends have been overcasted.
