Diminutive Antique Suzani

$1,100.00

2672
2’-8” x 1’-10” (w/ linen backing, 3’-8” x 2’-5”)

AGE & ORIGIN:
c. 1900
Central Asia

OVERVIEW:
Suzani are pieces of cloth whose design was typically first drawn on and then embroidered with various fabric, but in the most sought after types, this embroidery was usually done with silk. This particular Suzani is of interest for several reasons, the first being the size. Suzanis are typically larger, sometimes between 4’ - 5’ wide and 5’ - 6’ in length. This one is less intimidating in size, being a sort of petite version of the more often seen Suzanis.
The second unusual aspect is the field color. The most common type of Suzani field color is a cream or eggshell color; this Suzani, however, is using an audacious saffron for the field, something that immediately stands out, and adds quite a bit more character.

CONDITION:
Areas of reweave; sewn to a linen cloth for stabilization purposes.
