AGE & ORIGIN:
1st Half 20th C. (?)
America
OVERVIEW:
These are my favorite types of hooked rugs. Very little intentionality in design, rather most likely rooted in pure utility as the maker (AKA Hooker!) was using rags or old fabric to create a rug for her home. These rugs came in response to American aristocracy buying oriental rugs, and so those who could not afford these fancy new rugs were making their own. Some with their own designs, but others, like this, were simply done out of what was available (and probably quickly). A true form of American folk art.
CONDITION:
Slightly trapezoidal in shape and one small (1.5” sq) section missing
