Caucuses
OVERVIEW:
Derivative of local traditions enough to tell what it is, but done by someone without the resources of an assembly line, this Akstafa prayer rug is the embodiment of what to expect in a ‘folk art’ rug derivative. Viewing the rugs of the southeast Caucuses, it’s hard to imagine something so crude from this area, however, such are the art and rugs of those not confined to workshop conditions.
An off-white fields is the palette for similarly toned polychromatic, encased latchook designs with diminutive, sidelined boteh and a simple, primitive mihrab. A wonderful example of the at-home weaver being inspired by urban design.
CONDITION:
Worn; wall condition
