OVERVIEW:
The purpose of the Soffreh was originally not to be used as a rug, but rather a mat to place food on or to lay out on a table or surface for a special event or occasion. They are notable typically for their use of being flatwoven, using negative space and eye-catching motifs.
Most immediately seen are the ‘animal parades’ running across the field interspersed with different, tightly woven design motifs all across a strikingly orange field. Of note are the pointed borders which themselves have been given an interlocking hook design which forces the viewer to manage their perspectives and wonder if it’s the field or the borders that are meant to be hooked.
CONDITION:
Foundation exposure in some of the border motifs, some ragged selvedge and end loss
