Decorative Karaja Runner - 2'7" x 8'8"
#5900
AGE & ORIGIN:
Early 20th C.
Persia
OVERVIEW:
This rugged Karaja runner is an excellent example of the crossover that happens in weaving traditions of certain areas and villages. The construction of this runner must undoubtedly be attributed to Karaja. The single-weft construction, the simple floral borders and the floppiness of the handle are all indicative of this village weave.
However, the subject matter of the six exaggerated leaf medallions is very much from the neighboring (and more broadly famous) Heriz.
The colors are undeniably vibrant but not electric, a hallmark of the village weaves of this area continuing to use natural dyes well into the 20th C. The wear, as with other more brightly endowed pieces adds subtlety to the entire rug, leaving a much more handsome and subdued look in the final analysis.
CONDITION:
General decorative wear. Areas of exposed foundation and sections of re-painted warps and wefts. Will give a quote for securing of ends on request.
