Navajo rugs are curious, as many are not as old as one might think. It’s easy to forget that wool was not native to the Americas and many native tribes did not get access to it until they began trading with the Spanish who brought sheep from Europe.
A curious feature of Navajo rugs is that the designs, while clearly coming from a Native background, are actually imitating Oriental designs, as they were popular with the American market at the time.
