AGE & ORIGIN:
c. 1930
China

OVERVIEW:
Walter Nichols owned and operated a prominent rug weaving factory in Tientsing, China. The designs created were fashioned after the earlier Chinese-made Peking rugs with asymmetrical designs and motifs reflecting their Chinese heritage including potted plants, Buddhist symbolism, dragons, phoenixes among other designs.
Nichols’ rugs were being produced to cater to the American market at the time, which was craving bold colors and designs.
This particular piece is a product of later Nichols’ designs, modestly displaying garishly adorned flowers.
