Boteh Karabagh - 3'9" x 6'5"
#2515
3’-9” x 6’-5”
AGE & ORIGIN:
c. 1900
Caucuses
OVERVIEW:
I believe it is undeniable that the ‘Kazak’ Caucasian rug is by far the most popular, most sought after (and as a result, most mis-attributed) rug of the Caucuses. This has been true ever since Kazaks began being exported to Europe to fill the market demand.
Yet, this is a Karabagh, so why go on about Kazaks? Karabagh rugs get overshadowed by their more famous cousin, the Kazak. They are structurally very similar to Kazaks, so they bear the burden of also being misattributed to Kazaks. Yet many Karabagh rugs are undeniably beautiful, interesting and creative. They are also, in my opinion, more comfortable than Kazak rugs, given their origin in the mountains, and thus sporting a higher more plush pile.
Such is the case with this rug. Comfortable, colorful, interesting, bold…especially in its scale of boteh.
While perhaps not quite in the realm of collectors, it’s hard to deny the vibrant palette, as-of-now non-oxidized darker field and minimal wear that this piece has to offer.
CONDITION:
One professional repair at the bottom of the rug, a small area of old moth damage, white border contains some minor color bleed
