C. 1930 Painted Sarouk Rug
#2436 Painted Sarouk
C. 1930
4’-2” x 6’-5”
OVERVIEW:
Sarouks are some of the most recognizable rugs due to their ubiquity in the first half of the 20th century in America. These rugs were very popular at this time for their bold colors and inoffensive use of repeating floral motifs. The Sarouks of the 1930’s would prove to have slightly more negative space than their later cousins would in the 1940’s, as seen on this piece.
Many Sarouks would also be painted after production with a deep red, giving an almost ‘wine’ color to the front. The fact that it is painted is cemented when one looks at the back to see the original color was slightly more modest than what is seen on the front.
CONDITION:
Areas of low pile, one corner has been torn and is missing.
