Ethereal Caucasian Rug - 4'0" x 6'6"
#5886
4'0" x 6'6"
AGE & ORIGIN:
c. 1900
Caucuses
OVERVIEW:
A ghostly Caucasian rug, potentially Shirvan given the soft handle, but nonetheless filled with history of previous owners and personality. The most noticeable design aspect is likely the field that is inundated with animal figures, both boxed and freed across different panels. There are also small, nearly imperceptible human figures towards the bottom of the rug. The scene? This writer feels it may be shepherds with their sheep, but I will refrain from being dogmatic about it.
The human touch comes in the form of areas of the rug that have been darned in a rudimentary repair, showing the care and love some previous owner(s) had for this fantastically aged piece. The oxidation of much of the back field has left a 3-D characteristic to many of the motifs as well adding a depth to the rug, both literally and as part of its story.
CONDITION:
Old repairs and one hole in top left of rug (see picture)
NOTES:
Width of rug ranges ~2”-3” especially in the middle of the rug
