Heriz Area Rug - 8'5" x 11'10"
#2554
8’-5” x 11’-10”
AGE & ORIGIN:
c. 1940
Persia
OVERVIEW:
‘Iconic’ might be an overused and stale term to invoke excitement about most items, but the rugs of Heriz have been and will continue to be firmly in this category. That being said, these rugs had more humble beginnings as less refined copies of many finer rugs of Tabriz. Where Tabriz weavers had a command of curvilinear forms, Heriz and its surrounding villages took these shapes and whether out of creativity, or lack of experience (or both) wove rugs that took these forms and geometricized them to a point where they nearly became unrecognizable, and ultimately, their own artform.
Despite being woven this close to WWII, the vegetal dyes can still be seen in spades in this rug. ‘Dazzling’ comes to mind with an almost circus-like palette of golds, greens blues set against the wonderful madder red. The central medallion bursts in four separate instances, beginning with a small central flower, followed by the start of the eight-petal form encased in a navy blue, after which the second and third eight-petal forms come, the first with typical Heriz geometry, the second with almost Karaja-type petals encasing green and red strawberry-pattern forms.
CONDITION:
Excellent condition with mostly low pile
