Rare Khotan Pictorial Area Rug - 5'3" x 9'2"
#5878
5’-3” x 9’2”
AGE & ORIGIN:
c. 1930
East Turkestan (Antiquity)/Western China
OVERVIEW:
These rugs come from a rare group of weavings from the Khotan region of what was considered to be East Turkestan in antiquity and modern day Hotan within the Xinjiang region of Western China. While many weavings from this area have a varying array of motifs and colors, these East-Asian inspired pictorial pieces are perhaps the most distinctive.
While the four main vases are the centerpiece to the field, the peripheral items are also curious. Teapots and cups, trays, books, spears, staffs, a writing utensil and ledger…it’s these additional items that turn this from a simple vase pictorial to a woven still-life all framed by a thin bamboo lattice and oversized meandering floral frame.
A pastel coral establishes a foundation to the entire rug, permeating even the main border and punctuated by citrus accents, all of which offset the more realistic palette of the setting.
A very special piece in its design and execution and quite unlike anything else in our inventory.
