Lotus Fereghan Sarouk - 3'1" x 4'9"
#2555
3’-1” x 4’-9”
AGE & ORIGIN:
c. 1900
Persia
OVERVIEW:
Before the world knew Sarouk carpets for what they are today (orange or red/pink-painted carpets with floral motifs), Sarouks were mainly what we would consider to be ‘Fereghan’ Sarouks; stiff, beautiful and quintessentially Persian rugs. It wasn’t until later when the more granular ‘Fereghan’ prefix was applied to many of these rugs to distinguish them from those made en masse for the American market.
This small rug displays a classical Persian form with an 8-petaled flower in the center (thus the Lotus description, although most likely not necessarily a Lotus) with 4 corner spandrels. Perhaps my favorite aspect is the main border. A meandering rose vine seemingly attempting to defy typical border traditions in favor of a design that might appeal more to a European buyer.
CONDITION:
Excellent condition with some end loss. De-saturation of colors is present, most likely due to a fugitive red, but not uncommon for these rugs from this time period. There is an area where most likely a potted plant sat for a long time and left a near-imperceptible circle in the pile.
