OVERVIEW:
Technical notes seem to be the dullest part of such an emblematic rug, but I would be remiss in not mentioning that the field is indeed camel hair; thick, at that. I don’t care much to talk about the weave other than to remark at how ‘old’ the back of the rug feels, for whatever the tactile anecdote’s worth might be.
I had begun referring to this rug in passing as the ‘fallen star’. Of course, being a very tribal piece, it’s hard to say with any certainty the true meaning of something like this, which is what often makes these sorts of things so compelling. We may take the symbolic meaning of that however far we wish. We might project our own conclusions onto that of the weaver. Of course, the blob at the bottom of the field might well be a practice course for a less-experienced weaver, but then why did the border stay the same throughout?
To me, it’s these sorts of pieces that manage to, through sheer simplicity, force a discussion on meaning, which is great.
