Archaic Cosmological Rug
2623
3'-9" x 6'-3"
AGE & ORIGIN:
c. 1900
S. Caucuses/Persia
OVERVIEW:
While the attribution of this rug remains somewhat muddled, the innate beauty and visual interest captured by this rug is not, and is a reminder that occasionally old rugs harken less to antiquity and are more naively prescient of an evident timelessness.
There is an urge to pigeonhole this rug based on its design as a ‘Talish’, however the typical elements that make Talish rugs so discernable becomes interrupted here with the typically voided field pocked with small geometry. A map of stars or perhaps ships atop waves, although abstract enough to allow the viewer to use their discernment. Both almond borders have been stretched and broken to place them statically within their lanes, resembling less the typical meandering border and more akin to distinct medallions. The main border holds interesting elements as well; rotative squares and stepped diamonds serve as well-spaced medallions harkening again to some Talish interests, but may cautiously point to an even rarer Shahsevan pile rug.
This rug holds an interesting position between the decorative and the collectable. We have been conservative on the age, although 1890 is not out of the question, pushing into the 19th century territory.
CONDITION:
Near-original condition
NOTES:
Minor rewoven area (see photo)
Mostly full pile with some minor lower areas
Original kilim ends with one section that was stabilized
One minor pucker in border (see photo)
