Fereghan Sarouk Folk Art

$600.00

3’-2” x 4’-8”

AGE & ORIGIN:
c. 1900
Persia

OVERVIEW:
The undeniable runt of the litter in the family of Fereghan Sarouks, which is what gives it so much sway and character. The markers of this breed of aristocratic rug are here, but with the trappings that make it the more folky version, and thereby bestowing vastly more interest from a viewer.
While not explicitly (or even implicitly) zoomorphic in any of its designs, there are quite a few inadvertent nods to an animalistic design. The first are the very wonky spandrels, almost avian-like in their drawing. The second is the field taken in conjunction with the snaking, outlining bands that give form to an almost flayed-pelt look. The third, most clearly, are the diminutive grazing animals of the disproportioned central medallion.
These elements, paired with the coupled major central ‘sunflowers’ all give good evidence that rugs are art, and that our interpretation of these things, real or not, is sometimes what makes them so compelling.

CONDITION:
Worn with one large slit forming in center, wall condition, sold as-is
