OVERVIEW:
Precision is the operative word for bags using the reverse soumak technique seen on this bag face; a system where the bag is woven ‘in reverse’, so to speak, where the more typically seen soumak stitch is seen on the interior of the bag, and it’s back has become the main graphic on the front, creating an incredibly crisp drawing.
In this case, there is even a rarer ‘cherry on top’ to the piece: remnants of silk highlights within one of the memling guls, seen in the second picture. What might have been the occasion for adding such a flourish? We can only guess.
