2’-0” x 2’-5” (some variation in length)
AGE & ORIGIN:
c. 1910
Tibet
OVERVIEW:
A wonderfully precise and decorative two-tone Tibetan mat displaying five intricately designed floral medallions, perhaps derivative of a winding dragon or scorpion motif that has since evolved into a regal floral maze, flanked by auspicious peripheral symbols and a single scroll border.
Given the format, I feel the detail in the curvilinear sections is quite unique for something so diminutive, and for the weaving style these are typically known for. The coffee and navy colors are a very pleasant match, allowing for the designs to be apparent, but without the backing color being distracting.
CONDITION:
Excellent with minor corner loss and an old stain, only visible from the back.
