Unusual Serab Runner - 3'0" x 9'10"
#5928
AGE & ORIGIN:
c. 1910
Persia
OVERVIEW:
Among the types of Northwest Persian rugs, Serabs stand as one of the trifecta of well-known types, the other two being Karaja and Heriz. All three have design elements and structure that help them stand out from one another and set them apart from the swaths of other types of Persian (and Caucasian) rugs.
Occasionally though, black sheep appear, as in this case. Serab rugs have a very standard ‘look’. The fields are usually latticed, often in lighter colors, with varying main borders, and often turreted guard borders. They also distinguish themselves with a typically camel-colored blank frame encasing the entire rug. They are unmistakable, except in cases like this where there is what seems like a heavy Kurdish influence pulling on the design of medallions and figures found across the rug.
An exceptional amount of abrash creates a sunset spectrum across the field, framed by blues and tans among the border. In near-mint condition with full pile across the rug.
CONDITION:
Near-mint condition, slightly curvy shape
