Yomut Asmalyk

$3,000.00

2673
3’-8” x 2’-5” (at peak)

AGE & ORIGIN:
2nd Half 19th C.
Turkmenistan

OVERVIEW:
The world of Turkoman trappings can be overwhelming as the nomadic groups trend towards the woven arts for daily use and special occasions. One of these is the asmalyk, a typically pentagonal piled flourish for decorating camels. This particular piece employs a thorned lattice design consisting of dual-form nested medallions creating an ancillary design of diagonal rows. An ashik and mirrored birds foot border encase the field while themselves surrounded by running dog borders. A precise and intentional work with offset knotting within the field to achieve the diagonals.

CONDITION:
Excellent with full, even pile. Outer strapping was professionally done at some point and there are areas where this has been somewhat crudely replaced.
