Antique Shirvan Lezgi Rug
#2411 Shirvan Lezgi Area Rug
4’-9” x 7’-10”
AGE & ORIGIN:
1st Q. 20th C.
Caucuses
OVERVIEW:
At the turn of the century, Shirvan became a huge exporter of rugs to fill European demand. As a result, many of the rugs from this region from the early 20th C. borrow designs from across the Caucuses. The most prominent here are the use of Lezgi stars as the 5 main medallions, a motif originally from the N Caucuses. The field gives home to other motifs, such as a version of the endless knot, which is more Turkic in origin, latchhook ‘X’ shapes that would be found on more Kazak rugs and zoomorphic shapes that feel more Kurdish than the other motifs.
CONDITION:
Areas of wear, two major areas of repair make the rug slightly lop-sided. Some areas of exposed foundation, discoloration and one area of re-weaving on main field.
